Bike P’Arts, eh? I love bikes and cycling, and I think that bikes are beautiful. One year, at the local "Friends and Co." Christmas Party, the Yankee swap theme was used gear. I wanted to create something really unique with a definite cycling flair, so I gathered up an old, bent rim that no one would want, some worn-out chainrings and cassettes, and some bent spokes and made a windchime. It was pretty popular, and every so often, someone will ask whether I still make such things. Why, yes, as a matter of fact. I do. Let me show you what I've been up to...
A little of this; a little of that. I scavenge the “dead parts box” at local bike shops, and take it away before it reaches the dump. With some cleaning (okay, a lot of cleaning!) and creative reshaping, worn-out “junk” is once again beautiful! There is something satisfying about reusing and giving new usefulness to cast-off things. And if you're a cyclist, you just might think that bikes and bike parts are as cool as I do (just don't ask me to talk shop, please--I just appreciate the artful symmetry and, frankly, shiny is cool).
At the moment, I'm busy making windchimes, bike-chain keyrings, and Christmas ornaments, but I hope to expand my selection. Check out some samples here and at Artistic Roots Gallery in Plymouth--you really need to see and hear the chimes to get the full effect. If you'd like to talk about buying a piece, pedal on down to the gallery, send me an email (it's in my logo up top), find me at the coffee shop in Plymouth, or meet me for a ride!
